Agia Marina Donkey Rescue
Crete
Help & Outreach

Without your help and support we could not continue our work here at Agia Marina...

Our very grateful thanks go to CARAT (Caring for the Animals Trust UK) to whom we are affiliated for their ongoing support, in 2009 they donated the funds for  a stable to house the donkeys and provide shade during the hottest months and to keep them warm and dry during the winter. CARAT have also helped us with rehoming and expenses for feeding and medicines and have given a donation towards a vehicle to help transport rescue donkeys to the sanctuary.

We are very fortunate to be visited twice yearly by Equine dentists and farriers from GAWF (Greek Animal Welfare Fund) Team Elisa and Aris and the CAWG (Cretan Animal Welfare Group)  Gayner, Diana & Mark Hermans  from Ezelhulp Kreta  , Hans & Gary, they all do a fantastic job with the donkeys and we always look forward to seeing them...
Without these vists it would be impossible for us to meet the expense of providing private services for the donkeys. Most of our rescue donkeys have never had their teeth checked or rasped and many have problems with chewing and digesting their food which may cause problems such as serious weight loss which leads to many other health problems. Most of our donkeys come to us with neglected, overgrown hooves, the cause of a lot of pain. The farrier during his visit trims and cleans out the hooves and treats other problems such as abcesses, this can make such a difference to the quality of a donkey's life and comfort.
The Agia Marina Donkey Rescue is close to many small, remote mountain villages where donkeys are still used for daily work, we visit the donkey owners and offer help in the way of a farrier, dentist and advice with caring for their animals, most are very grateful for this service and look forward to our visits.
Also a big thank you to Diane Beijer Foundation for Animal Aid on Crete...a great animal group !!  They have given us head collars, brushes, hoofpicks etc and lot's of support :-)

Outreach visit GAWF (Greek Animal Welfare Fund)
March 7th  we had our yearly visit from the GAWF~ Greek Animal Welfare Fund Outreach Team of Equine Dentist & Farrier Elisa and Aris.
Over the whole day the herd all had their teeth and hooves treated, filed and trimmed.
Aris holds little blind Olive while Elisa extracts a rotten tooth which should make an enormous difference to her abilitly to chew.
Our many thanks to the team once again...

Olive's rotten tooth
Theseus was rescued last weekend after being found wandering alone in the remote South Coast Crete hills, was first in line to be checked by the Equine vet and farrier..
His diagnosis..very old, probably over 35 yrs, hardly any good teeth left but otherwise fine and well ...
Yesterday we had our yearly visit from the GAWF~ Greek Animal Welfare Fund Outreach Team of Equine Dentist & Farrier Elisa and Aris.
Over the whole day the herd all had their teeth and hooves treated, filed and trimmed.
