In October 2011 we received a call from the son of donkey owner asking if we could take his father's elderly donkey and care for her.  We were so happy as we have asked the owner in 2006 to let us take her, love & care for her...now it has happened after five long years. 10/2011 : This weekend I received a call from the son of donkey owner asking if we could take his father's elderly donkey and care for her. I was so happy as I have asked the owner in 2006 to let me take her, love & care for her...now it has happened after five long years. Ianthe means violet flowerVioletta will come to Agia Marina Donkey Rescue tomorrow from Matala, she is very lame and cannot walk far, only a few steps. I have given her an anti inflammatory needle to help her with the journey on the trailer.
The timing could not be better as tomorrow is the day of th Outreach visitVioletta arrived at the Sanctuary today. She was already feeling better after the Outreach team checked her teeth and trimmed her hooves. She is now ready to meet the rest of the gang...too many choices...red, blue, soft...what to choose? 04/2012 : Our rescue donkeys are all enjoying feeding in the barley fields...by June it will all be harvested into bales for feed over the hot dry summer months when nothing grows.
Violetta last night being taken back to the home field..somewhat reluctantly ;-)
06/2012 : Violetta's not feeling well today, she was not even interested in carrots which is very unusual but she did enjoy a cuddle and a rub from our lovely visitors from Germany :-)) while Zeus waits for his turn

Even Iason shows his approval at Violetta's arrival, in more ways than one !!..... and he is supposed to be convalescing

Apollo, Zeus and Iason were very happy to welcome the beautiful Violetta to the Sanctuary today...it appears that our new girl is in heat, she got a very enthusiastic welcome from all the lads !!

VIOLETTA is our Donkey of the Month March.  In October 2011 we received a call from the son of a donkey owner asking if we could take his father's elderly donkey and care for her. We were so happy as we have asked the owner in 2006 to let us take her, love & care for her...now it has happened after five long years. Ianthe means violet flower

Kαλημέρα, goodmorning, guten Morgen, bonjour, buon giorno, buenos días & god morgon to all our friends, fans & supporters
from our beautiful Donkey of the month VIOLETTA and all the donkeys at Agia Marina Donkey Sanctuary
Violetta, our Donkey of the Month, patiently awaits her turn for the dentist & farrier while an extended family of very proud geese with newly hatched goslings come to see what on earth is going on at the normally peaceful sancuary today :-)
We think she may have had a stroke, she's slow with her movements and her tongue is out...she is lethargic, slow but she eats her food, even though it takes her 2 + hrs. This often happens with older donkeys who have worked hard all their lives...she will be fine with special love and care

Haritomeni & Violetta enjoy their treats from our small visitors for the Irini Mare Resort....
April 11 2013
Our sweet Violetta was very ill....two weeks ago we believe she suffered a stroke as almost overnight she became uncoordinated and disorientated, tongue hanging out the side of her mouth and lost weight rapidy. We treated her with therapies suggested by our vet Manolis and she was improving slowly but on Tuesday she refused to eat and collapsed. Violetta was in the big stable lying down covered with a blanket and a pillow under her head, her therapy & our hopes continued but Violetta passed away peacefully early this morning...no more pain, no more suffering.
Here is a photo of the day Violetta arrived at the sanctuary meeting her soon to be good friend Haritomeni.
Thank you to everyone who sent in messages of love and concern.
