Odysseus meaning and name origin
Odysseus : Greek: Ὀδυσσεύς, Odusseus, also known by the Roman name Ulysses (/juːˈlɪsiːz/; Latin: Ulyssēs, Ulixēs), was the perhaps fictional Greek king of Ithaca and the hero of Homer's epic poem the Odyssey. Odysseus also plays a key role in Homer's Iliad and other works in the Epic Cycle.
Husband of Penelope, father of Telemachus, and son of Laërtes and Anticlea, Odysseus is renowned for his guile and resourcefulness, and is hence known by the epithet Odysseus the Cunning (mētis, or "cunning intelligence"). He is most famous for the ten eventful years he took to return home after the ten-year Trojan War and his famous Trojan Horse trick.

Origin of name
Odysseus is the main hero in Homer's epic poem 'The Odyssey', and plays a key role in Homer's 'Iliad'. According to Homer his name means "son of pain", but it perhaps comes from the Greek "odegos" (a guide; the one showing the way). If his name does have its origins in the verb "odyssomai", this has two meanings: to hate and to be hated. Therefore his name means "the one who hates and who is hated at the same time". This interpretation is reinforced by the fact that Odysseus hates the gods and he is hated by the gods. It may also mean "pain" in the sense of "the one inflicting and suffering pain" — not surprisingly, he nearly always suffers pain (mental and/or physical) and in turn inflicts it on others.

2017: Oddy ( Odyseus ) is a young stallion, as a foal he was tied by the back right fetlock to a tree, the rope became tangled and the blood circulation cut off damaging his leg for life.  Oddy was rescued and cared for by a very kind man named Giorgos from Sitea, he loved and cared for Oddy giving him oil massages and anything required to make the donkey's life better.  Oddy has come to live at the sanctuary so that he can make many new friends.  The journey from Sitea in Eastern Crete was long, over 3 hrs by truck. We were very fortunate to have a skilled, knowledgable driver ( also Giorgos ) and assistant and Oddy arrived tired but well.  Oddy is booked in for sterilisation soon, until then he must stay in his own corrall. He is not alone by far and has plenty of donkey visitors and admirers. Our teenager Ero who has fallen in love with the handsome young donkey...
