Kalypso
LATE IN THE SUMMER OF 2016 AFTER A VERY LONG DROUGHT WE WERE ASKED TO ATTEND TO A DONKEY IN A NEARBY VILLAGE WHO HAD RECENTLY GIVEN BIRTH.  WE WENT WITH OUR OUTREACH TEAM FROM HOLLAND EZELHULP KRETA BUT WERE UNABLE TO GET CLOSE TO THE MOTHER TO CHECK HER HEALTH, SHE WAS VERY PROTECTIVE OF HER NEWBORN FOAL AND VERY AGGRESSIVE. THEY WERE LIVING IN UNSUITABLE AND SQUALID CONDITIONS AND IT WAS VERY HARD TO WALK AWAY NOT KNOWING WHAT WOULD BECOME OF THEM, BUT THEY DID NOT BELONG TO US.

Kalypso meaning and name origin
In Greek mythology, Kalypso was a nymph who captured Odysseus for many years, before he finally managed to escape. She lived on the mythical island of Ogygia.
According to Homer's epic, the Odyssey, when Odysseus landed on Ogygia, Calypso fell in love with him and decided to keep him as her immortal husband. With her captivating singing, she managed to detain the Greek hero for several years. However, the time came when Odysseus' longing for Penelope, his wife, grew so strong that he could bear it no more. Wanting to tell Calypso, Odysseus instead told goddess Athena of his misery. Athena, being the protector of Odysseus, asked from Zeus to demand the release of the hero. So it happened. Calypso, angry at first, complained about how gods did not want goddesses to have affairs with mortals; however, she eventually backed out. Giving Odysseus wine, bread and a raft, she bade him farewell.

AS MIRACLES HAPPEN.. AND THEY OFTEN DO THE OWNER CALLED US THE FOLLOWING WEEK AND ASKED IS HE COULD BRING THE MOTHER AND FOAL TO LIVE AT THE SANCTUARY AS HE WAS UNABLE TO CARE FOR THEM.
WE ARE VERY GRATEFUL TO THE SUPPORT OF CARAT UK AND EZELHULP KRETA HOLLAND FOR ENABLING THIS RESCUE.
THE MOTHER IS CALLED KALIPSO AND HER BABY NOW 3 MONTHS OLD IS NAMED RAFAELA.  IN GREEK MYTHOLOGY KALIPSO WAS A NYMPH AND THE DAUGHTER OF TITAN ATLAS. SHE SEDUCED ODYSSEUS AND KEPT HIM CAPTIVE FOR MANY YEARS ON HER ISLAND OF OGYGIA.
