Iraklis
02/2017: IRAKLIS... IS AGED AROUND 25 YRS. A VERY BIG DONKEY WITH HUGE LEGS..A GENTLE GIANT.  HE WAS OWNED BY A FARMER IN A SMALL SOUTH COAST CRETE VILLAGE CALLED VASSILIKI.  IRAKLIS DID THE USUAL JOBS THAT VILLAGE DONKEYS DO.. HE CARRIED ON HIS BACK HIS OWNER, SACKS OF OLIVES, FIREWOOD, VEGETABLES FROM THE GARDEN AND MANY OTHER JOBS TOO.  WHEN IRAKLIS'S OWNER BECAME TO OLD TO WORK HE WAS UNABLE TO CARE FOR THIS FAITHFUL DONKEY ANY LONGER AND ASKED IF WE WOULD BRING HIM HERE AND CARE FOR HIM.
OF COURSE WE AGREED AND WELCOMED THIS BIG, HANDSOME DONKEY INTO OUR SANCTUARY.  HE HAS A VERY GENTLE AND SWEET NATURE AND IS THOROUGHLY ENJOYING HIS NEW RETIREMENT HERE WITH THE COMPANY OF MANY MORE DONKEYS FROM SIMILAR SITUATIONS.

Iraklis meaning and name origin
For the Greek Orthodox Church, name Iraklis is associated with a man referred to in ecclesiastical books as one of the 40 martyrs who were tortured to death along with St Maximus, Terentius and Africanus.Iraklis or Herakles is a male Greek name, which originates from the ancient years and refers to the hero Hercules of the Greek mythology. Extraordinary strength, courage, ingenuity, and sexual prowess with both males and females were among the characteristics commonly attributed to him. Heracles used his wits on several occasions when his strength did not suffice, such as when laboring for the king Augeas of Elis, wrestling the giant Antaeus, or tricking Atlas into taking the sky back onto his shoulders. Together with Hermes he was the patron and protector of gymnasia and palaestrae.

Origin of name
The ancient Greek name Herakles or Iraklis derives from the words “hera” – the name of Goddess Hera (Ira in Greek) and the word “kleos” which means glory; therefore, Herakles means the glory of Hera.

Nameday: 10th of April.

Iraklis is an honest man and a good friend, who does not forgive lies easily. He is usually into women with a maternal instinct
