Iason meaning and name origin
Iason or Iasonas is a male Greek name, quite popular in the ancient years. Iasonas derives from Greek ιασθαι (iasthai) “to heal”. The English name Jason comes from name Iason.
In Greek mythology Iason was the leader of the Argonauts. After his uncle Pelias overthrew his father as king of Iolcos, Jason went in search of the Golden Fleece in order to win back the throne.
During his journeys he married the sorceress Medea, who helped him gain the fleece and kill his uncle, but who later turned against him when he fell in love with another woman.
Origin of name Iasonas – Apostle Iason (Jason)
As mentioned, Iason or Iasonas is actually an ancient Greek name, but the Greek Orthodox Church has included it in the Calendar due to a very important man, Apostle Iason or as he is also known Iason from Tarsus.
Iason is numbered among the Seventy Disciples.
Iason was born in Tarsus, and was appointed Bishop of Tarsus by the Apostle Paul. With the Apostle Sosipater he traveled to the island of Corfu where they built a church in honor of the Apostle Stephen the Protomartyr and converted many pagans to the Christian faith.
Seeing this, the king of Corfu threw them into prison where they converted seven other prisoners to the Christian faith. For their confession of Christ, the seven prisoners died as martyrs in a cauldron of molten tar, wax and sulfur.
When the daughter of the governor of Kerkyra (Korfu), the maiden Kerkyra, learned how Christians were suffering for Christ, she declared herself a Christian and gave away all her finery to the poor. The infuriated governor attempted to persuade his daughter to deny Christ, but St Kerkyra stood firm against both persuasion and threats.
The governor gave orders to throw the Apostles Jason and Sosipater into a cauldron of boiling tar. When he beheld them unharmed, he cried out with tears, “O God of Jason and Sosipater, have mercy on me!”
Having been set free, the Apostles baptized the governor and gave him the name Sebastian. With his help, the Apostles Jason and Sosipatros built several churches on the island, and increased the flock of Christ by their fervent preaching. They lived there until they reached old age.

Iason
Iasonas (Jason) was left at our  gate years ago by Yiannis the local  donkey/ horse dealer....deemed "unsaleable".  We know he is very old but not sure exactly in numbers.  He has worked very hard all his life but sadly has not been well looked after and was very underweight.  He had never been wormed or had a vet check. The few teeth he has are in terrible condition.   Still now, Iason is our thinnest donkey (due to the bad teeth) but what he misses in weight, he sure has more than enough in spirit and sweetness

the beautiful ears of our sweet IasonDonkeys greet each other by smelling and blowing in each other's nose. The smell of breath imparts important information to the donkey. So greeting donkeys by blowing up their noses is an effective way to reassure them that you are friendly ;-)
Here's the velvet nose of our Donkey of the Month IasonHe is a lovely gentle happy boy who has very few teeth left to chew with, only a few in the front, none at the back.
He can't chew grass or hay but enjoys his 'special soft mix' made up of pellets, chopped grain & fruit which we soak in water an hour before he eats & it still takes him about 3 hrs Iason, our Donkey of the Month, enjoying his meal together with our geese ♥
Iason our Donkey of the Month...wishes all our supporters a big KALIMERA!!
The white patches on Iason's back are the result of untreated saddle sores which many of the working donkeys withstand for years...

TGIF...Iasonas, our Donkey of the Month, is wishing all our fans and friends a wonderful weekend ♥
IASONAS...our donkey of the month enjoying his cereal breakfast with the addition of yogurt this morning..a new taste sensation for our donkeys and they seem to love it !!

As soon as our Donkey of the month, Iason, sees someone walking around with a brush, he comes over and waits until you start grooming him. He has got such a gentle heart ♥

IASONAS ( Jason) continues to make very good progress, last month he had a thorough check-up by our visiting Outreach Team from CAWS...Cretan Animal Welfare Society
Despite only having several not so good teeth in the front of his mouth he...is able to chew his soft mix diet we give him three times daily and a cup of yogurt which he really enjoys and helps his digestion.
Iasonas is a happy, affectionate donkey who enjoys the company of visitors to our sanctuary and in particular children....and we wish him many healthy happy years to come ...

We have been very busy here at the sanctuary as Iasonas ( Jason) is unwell, he will not eat and is getting weaker. We have been feeding him on grated apple and carrot which he loves but even that he refuses now...
We are doing all we can to help him but sadly it seems he has given up.   A couple of days later, he was much better and eating well, well as well as Iasonas can ..
Our vet Manolis thinks it was a respiratory infection as he was wheezing and it cleared up very well with medication.
Today we have a warm, (20c) for mid winter sunny day, here on the Island of Crete, perfect for recovering tired old bodies !

Iasonas ( Jason, wearing the rug) seems much better today, this morning he ate trifili (clover) out in the field and tonight a full meal of his usual dried mix.
After almost two weeks of refusing to eat anything but a cup full of grated apple. This is heartwarming to see and we hope he'll get better

Old Iasonas always gives us a big fright when we find him lying flat like this....
This sight is a real heart stopper...Iasonas lying flat out on the field
Then after calling out his name his head suddenly pops up and what a huge relief it is !!
R.I.P. IASON, ARIADNE & ANTHOULA
It has been a very sad and stressful past month at the sanctuary, Iason ( Jason) fell during the night and although we were able to get him up his legs were too weak to carry his weight...Our dear old donkey crossed the Rainbow Bridge this evening and is at peace now.   Iason was left tied to our gate some years ago by the local donkey dealer deemed 'unsaleable' he was a skeleton of a donkey but thrived here, he was a gentle soul and dearly loved by all who knew him... Iason you will be very sadly missed.  While we are all still mourning the sudden passing of our beloved Iason Ariadni was in a critical condition after a suspected stroke, Anthoula was also still unwell and causing us a lot of worry but Afroditi and Talos seem to be bouncing back after a lot of TLC ( tender loving care ).  A couple of days later, another of our 'Golden Oldies' has crossed over the rainbow bridge..our beautiful Ariadni collapsed on a Tuesday after her suspected stroke. Despite all our efforts it was her time to leave us..Ariadni spent two happy, healthy & peaceful years here after her previous owner had threatened to kill her.   And last but not least,  our Anthoula/ Blossom has gone to join all her friends at the Rainbow Bridge, she ate some apple this morning then lay down in her stable, we tried to help her up again but it was not to be. At 16.00 closed her eyes and breathed her last breath while we talked to her and stroked her head....R.I.P. sweet little donkey.
It's been such a sad month for us all. Fanis spoke to a wise old Cretan Shepherd last night who said ' Just before the short but cold Cretan winter Mother Nature takes many of the old & sick animals away so that they will not suffer anymore '
